Needwood Golf Course

Needwood is located about two miles from the Shady Grove Metro Station and is a member of the Montgomery County Golf group. The course layout is decent, with the back nine producing a few picturesque holes exhibiting significant elevation changes. The majority of the course is fairly open, with sparse trees lining most fairways. The most challenging set of tees checks in at about 6200 yards with a rating of 69.1 and slope of 113, thus the course may not present a harsh challenge for low handicappers. We played the course over Labor Day weekend and found the greens to be in very good shape, while the tee boxes fairways and tee boxes were in fair condition.

Northwest Golf Course

Northwest Golf Course is located seven miles north of the Beltway in Silver Spring. The course is fairly flat and most holes play straight ahead, thus it is not the most visually interesting. The hole lengths also lack diversity, meaning that you will probably use certain clubs repeatedly. On the good side, the course has six sets of tees so that players of most skill sets will find an appropriate challenge. It is fairly open, although some long rough lurks behind many greens. Most importantly, we played in the course in late August and found it to be in great shape, especially considering the time of year.

East Potomac White Course

The East Potomac White Course is one of three courses located in East Potomac Park, found in Southwest DC. It is a short 9 hole course with three par threes and six par fours. The open setup, short length, and short rough make it attractive for beginners, while low handicappers will probably not find the course challenging enough to be interesting. The overall condition in the late summer was not great, but playable.

Falls Road Golf Course

Falls Road Golf Course is located northwest of Bethesda, about four miles off the Beltway in Potomac. The layout is reasonably diverse, with some nice elevation changes that make for some interesting tee shots. The most challenging set of tees is just over 6100 yards, so it is relatively short. The course is fairly open and does not contain a lot of water. We played it in the dead of summer (early August) and it was still in very good condition. The greens play faster than many other local public courses, so you may want to get there early to get some putting in.

East Potomac Red Course

The East Potomac Red Course is one of three courses found in Southwest DC at East Potomac Park. It a 9-hole par-three course tailor made for beginners. It is mostly wide open and contains little in the way of hazards. If you are short on time and/or money, is a good way to get in some work. The course also provides nice views of the Washington Monument and thus may be attractive to those visiting the city.
